CODES OF CONDUCT AND THE NATURE OF POWER

Dear PWN Vienna Members and Friends,

Has anyone in a position of power ever offered to give it up? Possibly, but it is a rare thing. Professional orchestras were 95% male until they started using blind auditions – where musicians perform behind a screen to prevent the director from knowing the gender of the applicant. Now women often make up over 35% of leading orchestras – not yet at parity, but significantly improved.

What are the business equivalents of the screens orchestras use to prevent gender bias? One is the Code of Conduct, a document created by Fondsfrauen, a network of women in top leadership positions in financial institutions designed to combat implicit bias in hiring and promoting women in the financial sector.

Learn about this Code of Conduct in a special interview with Christa Geyer, Head of the Center of Competence/CEE of Raiffeisen Capital Management and Chairman of the Supervisory Board at ASFINAG. Because the financial sector is one of the most male dominated industries, we have two events in October on this topic, but that's not all that's happening. We also have more Career Development Workshops, a mentoring update, and information on becoming a member of PWN Vienna - read on!

Linkup & Learn: Female Leaders in Finance - 12 October

Our first event focusing on the financial industry is a panel discussion composed of four inspiring women who hold top leadership positions in that sector, despite the biases. These four women will share their stories, the key challenges they encountered and how they overcame them, as well as their tips for making it to the top and successfully staying there. They are:

  • Joanne Hunger - Director Central Europe, Western Union Business Solutions

  • Sandra Simundza - Managing Director, CRO, Western Union International Bank

  • Gundi Wentner - Partner, Deloitte Consulting

  • Claire Gates - CEO, Paysafe Pay Later

This online event is free to both non-members and members because we feel it is an important topic, and also to give non-members a chance to join our community for the evening and get to know us - we encourage you to attend, and also tell your friends an colleagues about it!

Leadership Needs Women: An Interview with Christa Geyer - 21 October

PWN Vienna's President, Claudia Cordie, will interview Christa Geyer, Head of the Center of Competence/ CEE of Raiffeisen Capital Management and Chairman of the Supervisory Board at ASFINAG, about the Code of Conduct developed by Fondsfrauen. This code is intended to serve as a guideline for increasing female participation in leadership roles in financial industries, but can be applied in all fields.

We will learn about the 4 'killer phrases' that challenge and slow down the process of reaching gender equality at the leadership level, as well as the recommended actions for removing them. Claudia will also ask her about other initiatives by Fondsfrauen, such as how to improve the financial literacy of women. Because we want to increase awareness about this Code of Conduct and how it can be applied to all sectors, this online event is only 10€ for non-members. Register below and join us for an insightful interview!

PWN Vienna Mentoring Program - the Matchmaking is Done!

Our stellar Mentoring Team has gone through all the applications, held over 80 interviews, and matched everyone up. Kick-off is on Tuesday - the PWN Vienna Mentoring Program is underway. Good luck to all participants, and we can't wait to hear about what you accomplish!

Connect - PWN Vienna's Online Magazine

Mentoring is all around, and doesn't always require the support offered by formal programs like the one from PWN Vienna. If you missed Tina Deutsch's presentation on the different types of mentors, how to engage them, and the impact they can have on your career, view the article 'Guru, Anchor, Connector or Stern Aunt – which Type of Mentor do you Need?' in Connect Magazine.

While you're there, catch up with what else has been going on, especially a recent article titled 'Learning German - My Story' by our other President, Joy Medos, that will inspire those struggling with German to persist - an important boost, as learning German is often Challenge #1 for internationals working in Austria.

Membership Math!

Are you new here and not sure how much a membership is, how much our events and workshops cost, or even how often we have them? Let's start with the facts:

  • Linkup & Learns and Workshops cost between €25 - €35 for non-members, free for members

  • We hold one Networking Event (Linkup & Learn) and at least one Workshop every month

  • Membership costs €105 per year – it includes free entrance to all events/workshops (excluding social/cultural events)

  • Membership is a pre-requisite for joining the Mentoring Program

  • Membership also includes access to all PWN Global Webinars, and access to recordings of past events in the Webinar library

So, here’s some easy math – if you think you will attend 4 events/workshops within a 12 month time frame, (which in fact you could easily do within the next two months), a membership would allow you to attend all the events and workshops for a whole year for almost the same price.

What sounds better to you: 4 workshops for €100 or 20 for €105?!

Follow this link to find out more details about Membership, and be sure to contact Milica at membership@pwnvienna.net if you have any questions.

Community & Support

As the Corona virus spreads and the opportunities to meet up in person become limited, support from your communities are even more important - join ours and follow us on facebook and LinkedIn, and if you have any questions, write us at connect@pwnvienna.net.
